Volunteering
Our Chapter offers all members the opportunity to grow professionally and network informally with fellow Chapter members by volunteering on standing committees or special projects.
Our volunteer involvement encompasses both long and short-term time commitments and a variety of assignments. Some volunteers consult informally with other members on issues and problems within their area of expertise as part of our Chapter Member Network, while others write articles for our monthly newsletter, coordinate speaker appearances, and register attendees for meetings and seminars.

Community Education
The goal of the NOVA SHRM Education Committee is to raise the standard of performance in all phases of Human Resource Management in our community. We aim to accomplish this goal by:
- Developing cooperative relationships with local educators
- Developing and teaching practical courses in each of the HR functions (through our partnership with Northern Virginia Community College)
- Identifying volunteers to act as substitute teachers and speakers.
The Education Committee is actively involved in a partnership with Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). NVCC offers a Human Resource Management Certificate Program under its Continuing Education Department. NOVA SHRM members assist with teaching and developing, as necessary, courses in this program.
The certificate program is designed for:
- those who are interested in entering the HR field
- those new to the HR field
- HR Generalists wanting a refresher on the basics
- HR Specialists wanting to learn about HR functions outside there area
- individuals with PHR and SPHR certification looking for hands-on, practical to use towards recertification.
