This seminar provides an overview of supervising employees in the face of a changing and faltering economy and the new legal landscape created by the Obama administration. It will concentrate on the entire employment relationship, from application and interviewing to appraisals and discipline to employee terminations, while providing attendees the opportunity to evaluate their own internal practices and procedures.  The seminar will also provide guidance on regulatory issues, I-9 requirements, EEO-1s, and Affirmative Action Plans.  Further, the presenters will offer insight into their dealings with various governmental agencies, such as the EEOC, the OFCCP, the DOL and Virginia state administrative agencies and cover proper analysis and institution of reductions-in-force and settlement agreements/severance.  Also included is discussion of the role of HR with regards to technology, internal investigations, background screening and charges and suits brought against an employer.  Finally, the seminar will also focus on recent developments in employment law, including the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the extended COBRA rules included in the stimulus package, recent Supreme Court and Fourth Circuit decisions, and Virginia statutory enactments and court decisions.

About the Presenters:

Constantinos G. Panagopoulos is a Member of the firm in the Litigation Division and focuses his practice on labor and employment, commercial litigation, financial institutions, and insurance-related issues.  Mr. Panagopoulos’ labor and employment practice includes the representation of employers and management in a wide variety of issues, including discrimination, harassment, and other civil rights litigation.  Mr. Panagopoulos holds an AV® rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Education: J.D., George Washington University Law School, 1991 (With Honors) and B.A., Baylor University, 1988 (Cum Laude)

 
Jeffrey W. Larroca is a Member of the firm in the Litigation Division and focuses his practice on labor and employment and litigation.  He provides daily labor and employment advice, writes and conducts supervisor and employee training programs, conducts confidential investigation, drafts policies and procedures, and maintains a regular practice before federal and state administrative agencies and courts.  Mr. Larroca is skilled in multiple aspects of employment law, including Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, ADEA, labor relations, employment contracts, whistleblower claims, and class action defense. Education: J.D., Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, 1994 and B.A., James Madison University, 1986
