The Northern Virginia Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management requires
that its members abide by its Code of Conduct.
- Maintain the highest standards of professional and personal conduct, i.e. objectivity, competency, integrity, commitment, balancing self-interests and mutual respect of employment relationships.
- Strive for personal growth in the field of human resource management.
- Support the Chapter’s strategic and succession plans for developing the Human Resource Management Profession.
- Encourage my employer to make the fair and equitable treatment of all employees a primary concern.
- Strive to make my employer profitable both in monetary terms and through the support and encouragement of effective employment and human resource practices.
- Instill in employees and the public a sense of confidence about the conduct and intentions of the Northern Virginia Chapter of SHRM and its employers.
- Encourage our employers to uphold laws and regulations relating to their business activities.
- Refrain from using my position, either regular or volunteer, to secure special privileges, gain or benefit for myself.
- Refrain from using my participation in Chapter activities and the membership directory for financial gain and business development.
- Conduct all business transactions in an ethical manner such that their actions reflect positively upon the profession and their employers.
- Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Improve public understanding of the role of human resource management.
This Code of Conduct has been adopted by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management to promote and maintain the highest standards of personal conduct and professionalism among its members. By joining National SHRM and the NOVA SHRM Chapter, a member espouses this Code of Conduct, thereby assuring public confidence in the integrity and service of human resource management professionals.
At the recommendation of an Officer or Director and with the approval of a majority of the Board, membership in the NOVA Chapter of SHRM can be terminated. Actions that may result in disqualification from membership with NOVA SHRM include willful violations of the Code of Conduct and/or unprofessional behavior. Initial violations may be handled in an unofficial manner with a reminder to the member that they are in violation of the Chapter's Code of Conduct. Anyone on the Board can provide this feedback to the member. Repeat or serious violations of the code of conduct will result in a Board vote on membership eligibility. The President shall poll the Board and notify the member of the results within two weeks.
