Frequently Asked Questions

Questions frequently asked of our volunteer staff:

Q:What is SHRM?

A:SHRM is the Society of Human Resource Management, a professional HR association.

Q:What does NOVA SHRM stand for?

A:The Northern Virginia chapter of the SHRM.

Q:What is a 100% chapter?

A:A local SHRM chapter where all members must be a member of the SHRM.

Q:My company wants to be a coporate member. Can they do that?

A:NOVA SHRM does not offer corporate memberships. Only individuals may join.

Q:Can I belong to more than one local chapter at a time?

A:Yes. However, you must designate just one chapter as your "primary" chapter on your membership application.

Q:How often does NOVA SHRM meet?

A:NOVA SHRM holds regular chapter meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Meetings alternate between breakfast and dinner meetings to provide the best opportunity to participate for members who may be constrained by their work schedules.

Q:Do I have to attend every chapter meeting?

A:No. However, you will miss great programs on topics such as: hints to obtain your professional certification, how to reduce a company's risk of litigation, how to recognize and take action to prevent workplace violence, etc.

Q:Currently, I am a line manager and not practicing HR. Can I still join the chapter?

A:Yes. So long as you meet the requirements for membership listed on our membership page. For example, individuals with a valid HR certification may join, even if they are not currently practicing in the field of HR.

Q:I want to continue my education in HR. How can the chapter help me?

A:NOVA SHRM offers a limited number of HR scholarships each year. In addition, membership entitles you to attend many seminars and workshops at a reduced "member's rate". Furthermore, you will be able to interact with and network among many qualified and helpful HR professionals at the regular monthly meetings, seminars, workshops, study groups, etc.

Q:Does NOVA SHRM provide a job opportunity listing?

A:Yes, Chapter members are able to post a resume and, as importantly, employers are able to post HR career opportunities online at www.novashrm.org/jobbank.

Q:How can I become more involved in the chapter?

A:All leadership positions in the chapter are volunteer positions. Any member in good standing who meets the criteria for the respective Officer, Director, Committee Chair, Committee Member or other volunteer role may participate in these opportunities. If you are interested, get more info on the volunteer page.

Q:How long has the NOVA chapter been in existence?

A:NOVA SHRM was founded in November 1979 with 14 members.
