Creating an Effective Employee Mobility Program

Creating an Effective Employee Mobility Program

In the Washington, DC region, the average employee spends 40-minutes to commute over 17 miles one-way. Tardiness isn’t the only concern when it comes to employees who get stuck in traffic, a lengthy commute can also result in decreased employee engagement and productivity as well as increased healthcare expenses.

This is one reason many employers look to enhance transportation programs that encompass a variety of commuting options, so employees can travel to work in whatever way helps them put their best foot forward when they walk into the office.

An added bonus to developing or enhancing employee mobility programs is that your business may benefit from reduced operational costs related to parking and real estate, as well as additional savings related to increased retention rates and employee productivity.

Businesses and HR Managers can create an inclusive and successful employee mobility plan by taking the following steps:

1. Conduct a transportation survey to determine employee interest in possible new benefits.

2. Implement a pre-tax benefit or direct subsidy for transit and vanpool.

3. Think about off-site travel for meetings and consider adding a carsharing or ridehailing benefit.

4. Add incentives for biking and walking to promote transportation as a wellness activity.

5. Implement a telework policy and provide compliance and engagement training to managers of remote employees.

6. Promote benefits directly to employees throughout the year through presentations, events, and email communications.

Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) works with Arlington County based employers, hotels, schools, multi-family residential communities, and commercial properties to create mobility programs that influence the lives of area employees, tenants, visitors, and residents. Through a recognition program called Champions, businesses implement new benefits and amenities to earn an increasing amount of recognition at four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. In 2017, ATP recognized 231 businesses and properties for their dedication to sustainable transportation and making it easier for people to access transportation services in and around Arlington. Out of those 231 participants, four employers achieved Platinum Level status and 37 reached Gold Level.
