What is Agile Human Resources? Agile HR is the Future of HR

We have all heard the word Agile. It's not just a buzzword anymore – in today’s world, it’s a requirement. However, contrary to popular belief, Agile is more than just a project management process. Agile is a mindset, a philosophy and a set of management practices for making decisions at the level of expertise, empowering people to learn, and experimenting with solutions that are co-developed with customers. In other words, Agile is a manifestation of design thinking in action. Organizations that want to be agile need Agile HR.
In this session, we will look at what it means for HR to be Agile and become a truly Agile partner to the business – going beyond just implementation of Agile tools to adopting a mindset that focuses obsessively on delivering a continuous flow of value to employees and customers, and manages uncertainty through experimentation and an iterative approach to developing solutions. Solving the Culture Puzzle
Presenter: Gerry Pierce and Janine Corea

A Company’s culture is unique to each organization because Culture is all about people, and Engagement is aligning personal and company goals, enabling employees to find personal satisfaction in their work, resulting in an internal commitment that drives initiative and pride in one’s work. In this presentation Gerry Pierce, CEO of HR Works, speaks about the key areas of focus for building a great culture and driving employee engagement.

Gerry shares his experience as the former Sr. Vice President of Human Resources (Chief Human Resources Officer) at Wegmans where he oversaw all HR functions and strategies as a member of the senior leadership team. Throughout the presentation Gerry will tell real-life stories experienced throughout his career which relate to each of the culture puzzle pieces. He also discusses how these strategies have helped HR Works become Great Place to Work Certified and rank as a Best Company to Work for in New York State for 10 consecutive years, and how HR Works helps clients develop and maintain highly engaged cultures in their own workplaces.


Hiring Veterans and Retaining Talent in the Midst of a Pandemic

Covid-19 has taken veteran unemployment rates from an all-time high.  Our employers are still looking to hire from this important and highly skilled population, but mysteries remain on how to attract, evaluate, onboard and retain this valuable workforce. David Muir, Jr. from Easterseals and SVP of the Veteran Staffing Network, will help attendees gain understanding of the veteran candidate profile, and the cultural difference between corporate and military workforces.  During this session, David will also provide insight identifying cost effective programs for better employee retention when it comes to veteran new hires.

Evaluating Embracing and Enhancing: Three E's of Workplace Inclusion

With renewed interest in and impetus on inclusion, companies are trying to prioritize inclusion as their core organizational value. In the backdrop of the current racial justice movement, there is a strong emphasis on true inclusivity and belongingness of minority employees. Although most organizations are rushing to include D&I statements on their websites and scrambling to implement D&I strategies, inclusion is a calculated, concerted, and comprehensive process. Meaningful and purposeful inclusion carefully connects an organization’s mission statement to its policies as well as its short- and long-term strategic plan. It is, also, vital to address inclusion from the perspective of race, ethnicity, gender, culture, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, ability status, and age among many factors. This presentation will go beyond diversity and introduce attendees to inclusion, in terms of true belongingness and providing voice and representation to employees. It will provide strategies to assess an organization’s inclusion policies and practices, and evaluate their effectiveness. If there is no D&I mission and vision, ways to implement such initiatives will be suggested. It will also identify why and how inclusion can increase the bottom line of a company from both capital and human capital standpoints. Embracing and nurturing organizational inclusion comprises individual and collective rethinking regarding goals, programs, and executive buy-in. And it is important that organizations learn it sooner than later. By becoming diverse and attaining targeted inclusion, a company can become the epitome of aligning with the contemporary paradigm shift and being on the right side of history.

Identity theft is the #1 reported white collar crime 20 years in a row. Showing no signs of slowing down, it is critical that companies develop cyber security awareness programs to help deter, detect, and defend against this threat. Your employees are your first and last line of defense. One wrong password, email, text, attachment or download can cost a company millions of dollars in damage.

While no one can guarantee identity theft can be prevented due to the human element of this crime. There are steps your company can take to minimize risk factors and create that culture of security. It is estimated that over 51% of all breaches involve human error. Identity theft awareness training and constant updating can significantly reduce the probability of a breach. The average breach can cost a small company and average of $3,600,000. Safe information handling practices are the key to keeping identifying information out of the hands of thieves. Congress and many state legislatures have passed legislation aimed at protecting confidential information in the workplace and propose additional legislative protections all the time.

Salima Hemani

Gerry Pierce

Janine Corea

Janine Corea is the Director, HR Strategic Services for HR Works, Inc., responsible for the Company’s outsourced consulting and compliance services. With twenty-four years of human resource experience, she is equipped with a broad understanding of human resource management, including employment law, employee relations, leadership and organizational development, culture and engagement. Janine also has extensive experience with training and development and project management, making her uniquely qualified to lead a team of consultants focused on identifying, developing and executing effective strategies for addressing clients’ human resource needs. Janine began her human resources career at Paychex, Inc. where she spent almost twenty years supporting and growing the organization’s human resource outsourcing services. She joined HR Works, Inc. in September 2015 as an HR Consultant, providing consulting services for both profit and non-profit clients, and was promoted to HR Consultant Services Manager in April 2016. In September 2019, Janine was again promoted to a Director, HR Strategic Services, a newly formed position created to help drive the strategic direction of the Company’s consulting and compliance services, as well as develop and grow services in the area of employee engagement and culture. Janine holds a B.S. degree in Business Management, with a specialization in Human Resource Management, from SUNY Brockport, as well as both the PHR and SHRM-CP certifications. She also served on the Board of Directors for the National Human Resources Association - Rochester Affiliate, as Co-Director of Professional Development.

 

David Muir

Mr. Muir is the SVP of a social enterprise project of Easterseals DC||MD|VA, the Veterans Staffing Network (VSN). The VSN is dedicated to providing top-tier military talent to employers while assisting veterans, guardsmen, reservists and military spouses secure long-term, meaningful jobs.

Since being hired to build the VSN, Easterseals has been responsible for putting more than 2,500 men and women to work in 35 different states. This unique program has enabled Easterseals to provide career coaching services to nearly 11,000 veterans and family members over the last 6 years.

Prior to joining Easterseals, Mr. Muir developed a job search curriculum utilized by the Commonwealth of Virginia and in 2011 was the Solution Architect and Lead Instructional Designer of the first redesign of the TAP Employment Workshop in more than 20 years.

 

Pratibha Kumar

Dr. Pratibha Kumar is the Founder of Sungh Consultancy LLC, a diversity and inclusion company in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. metro region. She is an Associate Professor of Communication at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland, and her teaching and research interests include interpersonal and intercultural communication, multiculturalism, and gender. Her training philosophy is to apply relevant theoretical concepts to practical settings of organizations and personnel management in order to help companies achieve their full potential. Dr. Kumar delivers talks and presentations to local SHRM chapters as a way to give back. She also provides trainings, seminars, and coaching to organizations on D&I and communication issues. Her terminal degree and academic appointments have given her access to the latest research and information on topics of diversity and inclusion. She is a current member of the Carroll County SHRM in Maryland.

Dr. Kumar holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of North Dakota, and she has been teaching and conducting research since 2004. Her research has focused on cultural differences among astronauts on the International Space Station, social change and reform in developing countries, immigration issues, Muslims and Islamophobia, etc. She has written and presented papers at regional, national, and international academic conferences as well as spoken at non-academic, community settings. Recently, her chapter titled, “Intersection of Race and Gender: Women of Color Leading Groups” was published in an edited book Examining Social Identities and Diversity Issues in Group Therapy: Knocking at the Boundaries .
