NOVA SHRM has been a forerunner in mentoring thought leadership for multiple decades, winning the SHRM Pinnacle Award for Excellence for both a one-on-one mentoring model and a peer-group mentoring model. We want to raise our members’ awareness about modern approaches to mentoring so they can apply these techniques in their own organizations.

Mentoring programs have been around for ages and many people have experienced the positive impacts of mentoring in some way in their personal or professional lives. The May HR Magazine featured an article on “HR Mentors Matter” which showcased a handful of professional mentoring relationships among HR professionals. The article described modern mentoring techniques that are more about coaching with questioning as opposed to lead people by the hand. A 2017 report from the Association for Talent Development noted that modern mentoring partnerships are also relatively short in duration and are more task and specialty oriented. Also, only about 29 percent of organizations had a formal mentoring program in place. Organizational benefits for mentoring programs include supporting employee professional/career development, better understanding of organizational culture, and developing new perspectives. In a 2016 report from Deloitte focused on Millennials, those who intended to stay with their organizations for more than 5 years were more than twice as likely to have mentors than those who did not.
