Q:  Do I need to be a National SHRM member to be a NOVA SHRM member?
  • Yes! Northern Virginia Society for Human Resource Management is a 100% Affiliate Chapter of The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). This means you must first be a member in good standing with National SHRM before you are eligible to apply for membership with Northern Virginia SHRM.
Q: What are the benefits of being a NOVA SHRM member?


There are a lot of benefits that make us a “Cut Above the Rest,” but a few that are high on the list, are the following:

  • Access to all SIG meetings free of charge
  • Reduced rate to attend Academies and special events
  • Access to SHRM Foundation scholarships, in order to obtain a Degree, Diploma or Certification
  • Participate in the SHRM Certified Study Group, for a reduced rate
  • A network of HR professionals who are striving to learn and grow on a regular basis
Q: How do I renew my membership with NOVA SHRM?


The best way to renew your membership with NOVA SHRM is via the link here online. All memberships with NOVA SHRM run on a rolling calendar year, so if you renew your membership (before or after it is due), it will expire on the same day your renewal is processed.

Q: Is my membership pro-rated or on an annual basis?


Membership with NOVA SHRM is not prorated, it is on a rolling calendar. We give members a full year whether they buy a membership in January or later.

Q: How do you register to become a Member in Transition (MIT) with the NOVA SHRM Chapter, and at National SHRM?
  1. In order to become a Northern Virginia SHRM Transition member, all applicants should apply for a Transition membership on our site; in order to develop a profile in our Northern Virginia SHRM database.
  2. In order to become a National SHRM Transition member, be sure to review the information and application process for this one-time offer through this link.
Q: I’m an employer looking to post a position, how do I start the process of doing so, with NOVA SHRM?


NOVA SHRM has a vendor who manages our vendor who manages our Careers Page for our Employers directly.

Q: I’m a job seeker, trying to find a job, where can I see the list of recent openings?

Q: If I am a member of multiple SHRM Chapters (i.e. Dulles, Leesburg, DC, etc.) can I still be a member of NOVA SHRM?


Yes! Any professional interested in joining multiple SHRM Chapters, can join as many as they desire. The main point to recognize is that you will be asked to designate ONE as your primary chapter. This is significant as that Chapter will receive resources from National SHRM. Be sure to choose the Chapter where you are most connected, engaged and get the most of your membership.

Q: How do I designate NOVA SHRM as my Primary Chapter?


The best way to designate NOVA SHRM as your Primary Chapter is through our Chapter Designation form Once completed, please be sure to send it to NOVA SHRM’s Executive Director.

Q: If I am a Speaker and/or Consultant, how do I submit information in order to be considered?

The best way to be considered for a speaking opportunity with NOVA SHRM, is via our Speakers Bureau. You can submit your application and it will be directed to our Programs Team, who manage our monthly Chapter programming. If there is not a fit, they may send your application to a Special Interest Group (SIG) leader for consideration.

Q: How can I register for a SHRM-CP/SCP Certification Study Group?

Q: I’m interested in getting more involved with the chapter, and/or would like to be on the board of directors. How do I get involved?


The best way to get involved with NOVA SHRM is to review the list of open volunteer positions here. At the end of October/early November timeframe, we conduct an assessment of our current board. At that time, we are able to confirm which positions will be open and which ones will not. Throughout the month of November, the available board of directors’ roles are posted and a robust recruitment process is done to fill those positions.

Q: What is the process to apply for the Mentor HR Program?


The Mentor HR application process is open during the month of November each year. Selection and matching takes place between December and February. The program kicks off in March and runs through January of the following year. For more information, please contact the Mentor HR Program Director.

Q: How do I contact a Board, Committee member and/or SIG Leader?


The best way to get ahold of a Board, Committee member and/or a SIG Leader is to send a message through the Contact Us page. Your request will be sent to our Communications team and forwarded to the appropriate individual..

Q: How do I find a receipt for an event I recently attended?



Feel free to download your receipt for reimbursement via the Northern Virginia SHRM website: Your request will be sent to our Communications team and forwarded to the appropriate individual.

  1. Use the box to the right of this page to log into your account;
  2. That same box should now have a heading of My Profile – click the second link down in the box: Manage Profile;
  3. Under the heading Invoices, Payments & History select Invoices
  4. Change the selected dropdown value of the field Filter by status: to Any Status;
  5. You can then view and print out your receipts.
Q: When will I get the HRCI and SHRM credit code for a meeting I attended?


Our VP of Programs will send a survey to receive feedback from the event within one week of the event. Once you have completed the survey, your certificate will be available in your profile.

Q: Can I get a refund for a meeting I can not attend?


The Cancellation and Refund Policy is below:

  • Cancellation requests received prior to 2 calendar weeks before the scheduled event date will be fully refunded.;
  • Cancellation requests received between 1-2 calendar weeks prior to the scheduled event will receive a 50% refund.
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellation requests received less than 1 week prior to the event.
  • Registrants that do not attend the event and fail to submit a cancellation request will not be granted a refund.
Cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing to Treasurer  containing the following information: 
  • Full Name
  • Home and email address
  • Name/date of program
Q: How can I confirm my username and reset my password?


If you did not create your username yourself, then your username is the same as your email address.   If you created your own username, but do not recall what it is, email our Communications Team directly and we'll help you get back into your account! Click here, or the Forgot Password link in the sidebar to reset your password. Your request will be sent to our Communications team and forwarded to the appropriate individual.

Q: Can I access past Legal Reports that were published in the Newsletter?


Yes, past Legal Reports are published in the News section of the Northern Virginia SHRM website, and can be found using this link.

Q: I have a question, but I don't see it listed here, what should I do?
